Source: WTL research files. Cartoon: "Figure Representing the Black Race" (1932) in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Comments: This painting is a cartoon created before executing the same fresco on the north wall of the Institute's Garden Court. This same year, Frida Kahlo had a miscarriage at the Henry Ford Hospital; she then returns briefly to Mexico to take care of her sick mother, while he remains in the United States doing murals in Detroit and negotiating a commission to do murals at the RCA building in New York City. For a brief tour in 2009 of the location of Rivera's famous mural (1932), see: => Rockefeller Center Battle. Humanities Question: In this nude cartoon, what comments is Rivera making about the Afro-American people? |
