Diego Rivera: Self-Portraits (4)

Image: Self-portrait (1941) in the Museum of Art at Smith College, in Northhampton, Massachusetts.
Comments: In December, 1940, the San Francisco Museum of Art holds an exhibition of Rivera's works. In 1941, Sigmund Freud commissioned Rivera and Frida Kahlo to paint self-portraits for him. This painting is almost identical, but it was commissioned by the actrice Irene Rich. The Spanish note says: "I painted my portrait for the beautiful and famous actrice Irene Rich, and it was in the city of Santa Barbara in Southern California in the month of January, in the year 1941. Diego Rivera."
Questions: What is the artist saying about himself? How does the note relate to the sense of the painting?
